As your 65th birthday approaches, a ream of marketing materials will arrive in your mailbox! Without knowing what to expect, learning about plans for Medicare beneficiaries can be overwhelming. It’s tough to sort through all the options that are presented to you! Having an experienced adviser available to educate and help you through the process of enrolling in a Medicare policy, can be a great stress reliever.
In the midst of learning about Medicare coverage, it’s important to understand the type of policies available to you, and the timing in which you can access them. After you’ve applied for and received your Medicare Part A & B card, you are considered newly eligible to begin your new policy effective on the the 1st of the month of your 65th birthday. You are given an Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which allows you to complete enrollment paperwork prior to, and shortly after your birthday month, depending on the type of coverage you choose.
After your initial enrollment into the Medicare plan of your choice, there is an Open Enrollment Period (OEP), which allows you to select another plan for the next calendar year. October 15th through December 7th is your window of time to complete a new enrollment form and submit it to the carrier of your choice, for a January 1st effective date. In addition to these time periods, there are other specific events which may newly qualify you to make a change in your plan.
